Cleansing Breath: Ujjayi Breathing

By Shirly Oh | April 24th, 2010

Ujjayi breath is also known as Ocean breath or Victorious breath, which helps to clear toxins out from the bodily system. A simple and effective breathing technique that can be practiced anytime and anywhere.

Regular practise of Ujjayi Breathing has mounting benefits:

  • Helps to stabilize blood pressure and heart rate (depending on the speed and intensity of practise)
  • Helps with insomnia, pain reduction and migraines
  • Internal purification and detoxification through the heat generated from the breathing
  • Increased concentrated and focus ability
  • Strengthen the lungs and respiratory system
  • Good remedy for thyroid problems
  • Minimise distractions and induce a more grounding and centering effect
  • Calms and relaxes the body and mind

Getting started:

  • Sit in crossed legged pose or lie down on your back comfortably
  • Start by inhaling and exhaling slowly through your mouth (not through your nose), creating a ‘ahhhhh’ sound
  • Focus your awareness on the back of your throat
  • You will notice a slight vibration or a rubbing sensation coming from your lungs
  • Continue this for a few rounds until you are completely familiar and at ease with the practise
  • Repeat using the same technique but this time with your mouth closed and breathe through your nose instead

Important note: please check with your doctor or the Yoga Teacher for any pre-existing medical conditions before commencement of any Yoga poses or exercises.
