Yoga Sutra 1:39

Any enquiry of interest can calm the mind.

“Does anyone have any injury to declare before I the start of the class?”

This is one of the most common opening lines at the start of each practice. Very often, students affirm the teacher with no injury without much awareness. However, as the session moves on, one becomes more aware of their body conditions.

We just need to take a little courage to ask ourselves, “How much do I know about myself?” We think we know best, but in fact, we do not.

When our body gives us signals, most of us choose to ignore them. Because we think we have better things to do; or we choose to compromise with the aches and live with it.

The time we stop being curious, is the time the process of enquiring discontinues. We do not understand what we do not know, unless we are being inquisitive.

Only through self-questioning, will we not flare up without control. We don’t vent our anger on our family and friends just because we are angry; without knowing the root cause of such resentment.

Only when we see the underlying problem, can we be as calm as ever.

Just like a baby cries when thunder booms, because the baby does not understand what’s going on, and cries out of fear. But we don’t cry during thunderstorms, do we?

Instead of “I don’t know”, top it up with “It’s time for me to find out”.
